SS18 – The Designer’s View

Head of Design William H. discusses the latest Kalf collection for spring/summer 2018.

This season we have really focused on creating pieces that work in a range of conditions, products that protect but don’t weight you down…

These garments are an essential part of a cyclist’s wardrobe especially if they ride in changeable climates and conditions. Highlights here are the new Club Lightweight Gilet for both men and women and the Men’s Lightweight Jacket – a long time was spent ensuring fabric selection and fit was perfected. Again, the guiding principle is always function with form, so every element is considered for practicality.

For legwear we have introduced some new Women’s specific ¾ Length Waist Tights, also great for varying conditions and with some articulation in the cut we think people will love.

We’ve also brought in some unisex Oversocks, a classic road riding item but again essential to your wardrobe for fresh mornings and unpredictable conditions. And sticking with the theme of garments for transitioning between temperatures; we are also really proud to launch our innovative new Printed Mesh Base Layers which use ultrasonic bonding construction to minimise seam irritation against the skin.

In terms of the colour palette for this season; this was in part inspired by applying colours found in a burning evening sun and a handful of bold hues that work across the collection. Bright peach is a key component and driver on some of our transitional pieces, offering safety with style. And our popular Flux Print jerseys are back with striking two and tri-tone colourways.

We are offering additional colour options for this season on our sublimation jerseys, which have proved very popular and the quality we think is even better now. Our factory in the EU has just invested in some very impressive technology, offering the best printing available. We are currently working even closer with the factory to perfect the process and get the best possible results, where the fabric, print and construction is unbeatable.

We have a number of factories that we work with. For this season the kit was split between the Far East and Europe. As mentioned, the sublimation pieces are produced in the EU along with all legwear where all the best mills are based, such as Italy for the Roubaix fabrics and chamois pads. For the outwear pieces we drew on the expertise of China and Japan. For the Lightweight Waterproof Jacket we’ve sourced an incredible 3-layer Japanese shell that offers a beautifully light and incredibly breathable membrane.
